Aloe ciliaris 'Firewall', also called Groundcover Aloe or Fire Break Aloe, is a low-growing succulent from South Africa, known for its dense green rosettes and year-round red to red-orange flowers. It grows to a height of 1 to 3 feet and spreads 6 to 15 feet, forming mounds of arching, semi-woody stems covered with lance-shaped, 4-inch leaves. The plant produces foot-long inflorescences with vibrant scarlet flowers, which bloom especially in late winter and spring, attracting pollinators like hummingbirds. The leaves are adorned with short cilia, giving it its name, and the plant is more compact and robust than the climbing species Aloe ciliaris. Aloe ciliaris 'Firewall' thrives in full sun but tolerates light shade, needing minimal irrigation and handling well-drained soils. It is cold-hardy to 20-25°F and suitable for fire-prone areas due to its fire-resistant qualities, particularly in USDA zones 9a–10b. Native to South Africa, it has been popular in California gardens since the 1980s, especially in coastal areas. This aloe is widely used as groundcover for fire control, on slopes, or as a low hedge. Its year-round flowers and drought tolerance make it ideal for xeriscape gardens.
This plant has been grown in a 1 ga pot. You will receive a very similar plant to the one in the picture. The plant is shipped "dry root" (without soil).
